If you have read the previous 3 articles and continue to read this one, the common thread through all of them is that all the suggestions can be done by you with a minimum of disruption to your current lifestyle, they don't cost you much or even nothing in most cases. You don't need to go on any strict diet or exercise regime and you don't need to buy expensive equipment or food or guru advice.
So in keeping with the above theme I am going to give you some tips on walking to make it more effective and fun.
1. Make sure you have comfortable clothes and footwear.
2. Take some water with you or some money to buy some water along the way.
3. If possible get your partner, a friend or your kids to come with you or take your pet.
4. Go at a time when you can enjoy the surroundings. Peak hour traffic is not really a great time to go if you're walking the main streets.
5. Walk in pleasant surroundings like a park or the water-front or along a river or a bush walk or streets of flash houses.
6. Make your walk more challenging by walking around hilly areas.
7. Make it even more challenging by walking 2 lamp-posts and then jogging 1 or some other combination which suits you.
8. Set goals for yourself like walking a certain distance in a set time and then challenging yourself to beat that time or increase the distance.
9. Buy some Velcro weight bands which you can strap to your wrists and/or ankles. With up to 4 of these you can increase your weight by 10lbs or 4kg and this will make a big difference to you losing weight.
10. Take an iPod so that you will have something to occupy your mind rather than thinking about the walk.
As you can see these are simple steps that you can follow. And as a final idea to help your motivation, plot the mileage you walk on a map and then you can see how long it will take you to walk from your city to the next one or some other destination which will motivate you to get out walking. Enjoy!
